Guns are dangerous weapons, ready tools of violence, and they should never be where youngsters can access them. This, whether they are loaded, or unloaded. Many gun injuries occur when a child gains access to household firearms that are stored loaded and/or in unlocked locations. when parents are determined to keep guns in their home where they have children, they should store all of the household guns locked in hard to find places with the ammunition locked way from the gun.

Regrettably, there are horrific media reports time and time again about children accidentally shooting themselves or others with guns which were negligently left accessible to them at home.

Those persons with guns in the home are at greater risk  of suffering gun violence than those without guns in the home.

Most children know nothing about the existence of guns until they have been brainwashed by TV, movies, and games with visions of guns. At that point, it is absolutely foolhardy to have a gun in a place where a child can access it? It can be a tragic accident waiting to happen.

In general, peoples worry about thieves entering the homes and robbing them of their valuables and their guns. But, often,

they never worry about their children finding the weapon and playfully shooting himself, a sibling or a friend.

When I was a teenager, a group of us decided to go over to Little Billy Perry’s house before we left for school, As soon as we got there, Billy went into another room and came out with a 45 automatic pistol with which he was playing. He had taken the clip which held the bullets out of the gun, and didn’t realize there was a bullet in the chamber. He playfully pointed the gun to his head, pulled the trigger, and shot himself in the head and immediately died.

I learned the hard way never to have a gun anywhere in my home. Once I had a loaded hand gun in a hidden inside pocket of a jacket I had taken off and laid on a sofa. My five year old son found the gun in my jacket and started waiving it at his sister. Fortunately, I saw him, and retrieved it before my family suffered a horrific accident.

Some people leave loaded guns in dresser drawers, under their mattresses, in cabinets and various places where little feet travel.

The only answer is to follow non-violent rule number nine, and never leave a gun anywhere in the house  that’s accessible to kids.
