The impact of your opening statement will have a positive
effect on your winning answer. How you handle the first
ten or twenty seconds will weigh heavily on whether you win with your answer. Hence, your opening statement must include the following primary points:
1. The establishment of a harmonious relationship between you and your listener.
2. Something to stimulate your listeners’ pride.
For example, Miss Black America of Washington, D.C. was asked whether the Black woman should prepare chitterlings or broiled steak for her man. She didn’t hear the question correctly. However, she gave the following answer. “I think the Black Woman should stand beside her man. She shouldn't walk in front of him nor behind him. Her answer had nothing to do with the question.
The Rev. Jesse Jackson, who was a judge at the pageant, became emotional and applauded her answer. She ultimately won the title. Certainly this fluke is not what this is all about, yet it illustrates the importance of statements that arouse a sense of pride in the listener.
3. When planning the opening statement of your answer, it is wise to think of the listener's
point of view. You can understand exactly what his or her point of
view is when you are in total control of yourself.
Providing you are totally relaxed, you can receive
the vibrations of the listeners' frame of mind
from the corridors of your mind. What is interesting to you might be contrary to their points
of view. However, if you are aware of the climate
of your audience, you will say the right words and
win.
In the Miss America Pageant which occurred immediately after the deadly Newtown Connecticut shooting massacre, Miss New York was asked a question about gun control. In her answer, she denounced the NRA’s controversial proposal to post armed guards at schools. Her profound answer was, “I don’t think the proper way to fight violence is with violence,” She won the pageant. She sided with the majority of U.S. Citizens who were crying for some type of U.S. Gun Control. This was a prime example of understanding the climate of the audience.
Your opening statement should not disclose all the details of your answer. It should simply outline its general concept and create a demand in the listener's mind for the remaining details.
